29 Jan Ready, Set, Go!
When is the best time to start your renovation? The simple answer is, when you’re ready…but what does that mean? Before starting any project it’s important to ask yourself a few questions. These basic questions will apply no matter the size of the job.
Question #1 – Who is doing the job?
There are many projects, no matter the size, that can be handled quite easily, even for the novice DIY’er. But establishing who is going to do the project should be your first step.
Question #2 – What is your budget?
Costs can vary immensely, no matter the size of the project. Establishing a budget, and sticking to it, is paramount when planning the work.
Question #3 – When is the project happening?
Many variables will affect when your project can be completed. If you’re doing it yourself, you’re a lot more flexible on the timeline. However, keep these variables in mind:
- Permits; are they required and how long will it take to get them
- Material; are they readily available or special order?
- Contractors; if you’re planning on hiring someone, what is their availability?
- Financing; after you’ve set your budget, do you have it in place, including 10-20% for overages and surprises?
These are the most common questions you’ll need to consider before driving your first nail, we’ll go into more job specific questions in a later post.
